The Resident Assistant (RA) is a paraprofessional staff member and a vital part of a team devoted to achieving the objectives of the Residence Life program at Columbus State University. RAs are the closest and most essential link with the residents of the buildings. The duties of the RA are many and varied, requiring about 40 hours plus per month of his/her time.


  • A GPA of 2.5 or above

  • An honest desire to be of service to your fellow residents and to support Residence Life policies

  • Willingness to operate as a "Team" member

  • The time to devote to the position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as a liaison between the Department of Residence Life and the students

  • Serves under the supervision of a Residence Life Coordinator and the Senior Residence Life Manager.

  • Participates in community building and enforcing University Policy

  • Serves as a resource for Residents

  • Works as a team player


  • Private room

  • Bi-weekly pay to compensate for the cost of the meal plan (meal plan has to be paid up front)

  • Training in various areas (safety, first aid, conflict resolution, minor maintenance, etc.)

Time Requirements

  • Resident Assistants will be required to return to campus two weeks prior to classes beginning for training and move-in day. In addition they will be required to stay on campus until after the last day of finals concluding each semester.

  • Resident Assistants will have a set schedule of duty nights, as well as being on duty on the weekend throughout the semester. Scheduling for this is done during training prior to the semester.

  • RAs will have meetings throughout the semester, scheduled in advance, that will also be mandatory.

  • RAs will also be required to attend GRASS (Georgia Resident Assistant Saturday Seminar) in late January.
